A unique climate, the volcanic origin of the soils and the diversity and uniqueness of flora and fauna is the result of the contrasts between the terrestrial marine environment coastline and are the best introduction of Geopark Cabo de Gata Nijar, the most protected area of the Mediterranean coast.
The Sierra forms coves of great beauty that give rise to the fifty kilometers of best preserved cliff coast of the European Mediterranean. There are urban beaches such as San José and Aguamarga; Magnificent natural beaches such as Mónsul and Los Genoveses. Hidden and almost inaccessible coves like Carnaje and Enmedio. Spectacular volcanic cliffs and reefs such as Punta de los Muertos and Mesa Roldán. It is possible to recognize excellent examples of dune formations, both fossils, white and gray sands - San Felipe de los Escullos or Las Amoladeras -, as well as in movement, that originate coastal arrows that close interior lagoons and create attractive landscapes as the Salinas del Cabo de Gata, an exceptional humanized space for birds.
Cabo de Gata-Níjar has more than a thousand unique species of flora, which shows his botanical uniqueness. In the arid plain we can find populations of wild olive trees, palmitos and wild fig trees, that climb the abrupt volcanic slopes, dense formations of esparto and rosemary, that cover the plains, azufeifo, a hawthorn of deep roots that favors the stabilization of the dunes, and an outstanding population of steppe birds, rapters and vipers.
But, surely, the most outstanding enclaves of this natural space are the seabed formed by extensive meadows of oceanic posidonia, authentic submerged forests in which lives a great variety of fauna; Together with the Salinas de Cabo de Gata, an exceptional place for reproduction, wintering and migratory transfer of aquatic birds. The latter hosts a species as emblematic as the pink flamingo, as well as numerous shorebirds. Other places of interest are the nearby Rambla Morales lagoon, where it is possible to observe more than eighty species of birds, or the natural monument of the Island of San Andrés, in front of the beaches of Carboneras.
The maritime nature of this natural park conditions the presence of a powerful offer of activities. Diving, in clear and transparent waters -Las Negras, La Isleta or San José -, boat routes accessing coves of unusual beauty -Cala Chica or San Pedro-, canoeing or bathing give way to a tourist product that is developed in the best beaches of the Mediterranean coast.
The network of signposted trails offer a lot to walking, horseback or bicycle tours that allow you to discover the natural and cultural heritage of a protected area that has up to one hundred and fifty goods classified as of ethnological interest (farms, water wheels, cisterns and mills ) And a high number of forts and castles, in their day Berber pirate defense.
